God's Mission, Our Mission - Beauty

Beauty is not likely to be one of the first responses you would get if yu asked someone 'What is an attribute of God?'. Yet The Bible talks about God's beauty being seen in the creation He placed us in. Many people feel a closeness to God when they immerse themselves in creation, whether it be the ocean, the mountains or the outback. Even those that don't feel especially connected to God through nature can appreciate the marvellous designs around and about them in animals or the landscape when they think about it. Why is that?

God's Mission, Our Mission - Powerful Prayer

Reading through The Bible, it's not difficult to see what a difference talking to God can make. Having God involved in events would often see outcomes that were completely off the scale of expectation. From amazing victories against the odds, to people's lives being turned around and given a new life when misery seemed the only possibility. So, was prayer only powerful in the time of The Bible? Is it possible that speaking with God and involving Him in what we do with ourselves could have a similar, unimaginable impact today, in our community and beyond?

God's Mission, Our Mission - Be Love Sunday

It's easy to think about and love ourselves, those closest to us or people we see regularly. To be love to people we don't see, or hear from very often at all, if ever, is a different kind of love altogether; a different mindeset and pattern of thinking. For those of us who live in a society where things like food, water and shelter are commonplace, it's easy to forget that a lot of the world misses out on one or more of those basic items on a daily basis. Many of them are fleeing from violence or devastation. For most of those people, without the intervention from - that is, the love of - people in a better situation, death is knocking on their door. Our world needs us to be love.

Powerful Friend

Superheroes are powerful but are they friendly? Some are, some aren't. But the most powerful superhero of all can also be your best friend.

The Greatest Superhero Of All

Wearing your undies on the outside seems to have some amazing effects. Superman could fly, Batman was super strong, Wonder Woman was super strong, fast and smart and Spiderman could shoot out webs and swing through the city. Pretty cool stuff! But none of those superheros could make a blind person see again, or walk on water, or bring a dead person back to life. The greatest superhero of them all didn't have techy gadgets, and he didn't have a secret identity - the bad guys knew exactly who he was. It doesn't come any more powerful than that, and this superhero didn't even have to wear his undies on the outside - amazing!

S is for Sent

The disciples had been 'sent' by Jesus on a couple of occasions throughout their time with Him. Each occasion was an exercise for them to learn from and through. When Jesus sent them the last time however, they had graduated and it was time to put into practice all they had learnt. In the end though, they didn't really 'go into all the world' until persecution broke out; a bit like Jonah who didn't go to Ninevah until he'd been in a whale for 3 days thinking about it. All the while though, both Jonah and the disciples fit the definition of 'Missio' the word we translate as sent.

Father's Day

Dad. A word that will evoke a range of feelings and emotions from a range of situations. Some Dads are great, some not - none are perfect. Still, fatherhood is important and worth celebrating. Most dads like to have a laugh, so much so that there is a whole category of jokes attributed to the humour of dads. Each year, KawanaLife takes time to have fun with and celbrate dads. Most importantly we remember that there is one Father who is perfect, and loves His children like no other.

L Is For Learn

Learning is life long. There is always something new, particularly in the technology world, to have to grapple with and work out. Life, too, seems to have a way of throwing new things across our path; things that force us to learn. One of the best ways to learn something is to have an expert lead the way, showing the best techniques for us to copy and put into practice ourselves. A great teacher is someone who already knows all the things to avoid, and is willing to share that knowledge in a way that others can follow. Is there any better teacher than Jesus?

L Is For Listen

Talking with God can become a 'shopping list conversation'. That is, we can go through the list of thing we want and when we get the last item ticked off, conversation over. A real conversation, however, involves talking and listening - by all involved. So how do you listen when you can't see or even hear the one who's talking?

What's In A Miracle?

Miracles and the Bible go hand in hand. Old Testament or New Testament, miracles are regularly recorded and many of them were through Jesus and His ministry. Fast forward to today and western civilistaion, and we don't hear a great deal about miracles changing the lives of people in a dramatic way. Is it just that we don't hear about it? Is it that miracles aren't for today? Is it something else entirely? Brian Pickering of The Australian Prayer Network offers a suggestion by looking at the miracle where Jesus fed 5,000.

God's Mission, Our Mission - E Is For Eat

Eating is a big part of life, and is often so much more than just survival. Sharing a meal is at the heart of much of social life even for those who struggle to put food on the table. From something as simple as having a coffee with a friend, to a full banquet with hundreds of people, relationship is at the heart of it. It shouldn't be any surprise then, to find food at the heart of church, as it was in the early church days. Even Jesus talked about people getting together around food. How does this fit in with a modern day church?

God's Mission, Our Mission - Home Groups

It's easy to see the church as a building, whether it's an amazing architectural masterpiece or a warehouse. People say 'we're going to church' all the time, so it's easy to think about the 'bricks and mortar'. But the church is not a building. The church often meets in a building, but church is really the people. When Jesus said that the world would know His followers by their love for one another, he was referring to the people. Buildings that show their love for one another would indeed be remarkable, but not much help to us! Home groups are a vital cog in the wheel of that love that Jesus was talking about. Some would say that they are the wheel. So what are these 'Home Groups'?

Dr Suess And The Bible - The Sneetches

"Those stars weren't so big. They were really so small. You might think such a thing wouldn't matter at all". Everyone makes choices - everyday. Some choices don't even seem like choices, but they are. In Dr Suess' story of The Sneetches, it was the star bellied Sneetches that made a decision that the non-star bellied Sneetches weren't as good as them. They chose to put themselves above, to ignore the others. The choice soon became a way of life, no thinking required; choice made. God also made a choice that was to be permanent, with great cost, but for an entirely different reason.

In this message Dony uses the a YouTube clip of 'For The Birds' from David Redinha which can be found on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WjoDEQqyTig and '"Sneetches" as read by Craig' from Katie O'Toole which can be found on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pk4WzliCBHM. Dr Suess And The Bible - The Zax

"Never budge in the least, not an inch to the west not an inch to the east". Is there anyone that hasn't been in one of these kind of moods at some point? The Zax were so stubborn about not moving that roads were built over and around them - because the world moved on. Stubbornness can get us bogged down, stuck in the mud, while the rest of the world moves on without us. The Bible tells a tale of two such people...

In this message Dony uses the a YouTube clip of 'The Zax' from TheodorSeussGeisel which can be found on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dZmZzGxGpSs. Dr Suess And The Bible - Oh The Places You'll Go

"And will you succeed? Yes! You will, indeed! (98 and 3/4 percent guaranteed.)" If only things in life were a 100% certainty! At least we'd know when to duck or swerve or run full speed ahead. In Dr Suess' last book, he reflects on the journey of life and offers some wisdom to his young (and not so young) readers. The story reminds us of another, quite familiar Bible character...

God's Mission, Our Mission - Become

"What doesn't kill you only makes you stronger". It's a cliche that often makes light of a difficult situation, and yet, has truth to it. If we can get up again, having been knocked down, there is the opportunity for a situation to teach us, grow us, make us better equipped for the future - stronger. Often the process of getting up is overlooked. When your world is spinning, finding your balance again isn't easy.

Plants are taken, by people, to a greenhouse to recover and heal. People, too, can take time to heal and recover in a different kind of greenhouse.

God's Mission, Our Mission - Believe

In life it's easy to have some of the information in a situation and form an incorrect understanding; or perhaps just not a complete understanding. Script writers use this to their advantage all the time. Think of the murder mystery or a court case plot where all the evidence points to one conclusion. Then the big turning point arrives where another piece of information is given that completely changes where the finger of blame gets pointed. Sometimes you see it coming, other times you don't. So is it possible that the same thing happens when the Bible is read? And if so, how much information do we need?

In this message Brendan uses the song 'Relentless' by Hillsong United as an illustration as found on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3O_pAOiGuo. This song is © 2012 Hillsong Music Publishing, is written by Joel Houston and Matt Crocker and is available via the Hillsong Store site, iTunes and other music stores. God's Mission, Our Mission - Is God Bringing Them To Us?

The story of the events of Pentecost in Acts 2 are amazing, and in some ways baffling. They certainly baffled many of the people that were there at the time as they wondered how people from Galilee could be speaking in so many languages - some even putting it down to drunkenness. What is was though, was an amazing opportunity for God to speak to an array of people from all over the world and for that connection and relationship to be taken back to the homeland of those people. It was fast tracked missionary work, and the missionaries were the best kind, those from the same culture they were going to reach. So what is God up to with refugees? Could it be that a similar purpose is being played out in our day and on our shores? For more information about KawanaLife Baptist Church please visit our website kawanalife.com

God's Mission, Our Mission - Crossing Cultures

One of the most inspiring passages in the Bible focusses on a guy named Philip. He wasn't one of the twelve disciples, one of the 'A team' so to speak. He was chosen as one of the people who would relieve the twelve of some of the more 'practical' duties such as distributing food to those in need. He was a guy chosen to do what might be considered some of the lesser jobs, the jobs that wouldn't necessarily have the acclaim of the more public work others were doing. Nevertheless, today we are focussing on this story as a great example of what crossing not only borders but cultures is all about. You don't have to be in the spotlight for God to use you in an amazing way - you just need to be available to Him. Mothers Day

Mothers day is very different around the world. For some mothers, it's just another day with little or no significance at all. For some it is a joyful day, for others it is sorrowful. Mary, Jesus' mother knew all the agonies and extacy that a mother can experience. From the joy and amazement of a one of a kind conception, to the heartbreak of witnessing her son being nailed to a cross. Today we reflect on what it means to be a mother.

God's Mission, Our Mission - Persecution

Recent attempts by terrorists to cause the western world to live in fear have had minimal impact. We still live safe and secure lives with little to worry about where persecution is concerned. Yet we cry out in rage at these attacks. Only occassionaly, might we think of those whose daily life consists of not knowing if they will come home at the end of the day, because they are followers of Jesus. These two situations are worlds apart. So where is God in these different 'worlds'? Who is it that needs prayer?

God's Mission, Our Mission - Part 2

We all place some amount of importance on how good we look; some people more than others. Everyday we get ready for the day ahead and pay some amount of attention to how we look. We consider, at the very least, what is going to be the appropriate clothing for the tasks we are about to undertake. There wouldn't be too many people, for example, who would turn up to court wearing their swimmers! In the Bible, Paul talks about us putting on the right things, or clothing ourselves with the right things, on the inside. But do we pay as much attention to what we 'wear' internally, as we do externally?

God's Mission, Our Mission - Part 1

There's a saying that goes something like 'The only constant is change'. Change is everywhere; sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes permanent, sometimes not. Reconciliation is a type of change and often one of the hard kinds. Someone needs to forgive, someone needs to be forgiven - change. The focal point of the entire Bible is about this kind of change, about reconciliation. It is the most amazing, improbable, historic example the world has ever seen. For those who accept it, we are told to do the same, to show others a living example of this kind of change. Strap yourself in, this ride could get a little bumpy...

Easter Sunday - He Is Alive

The most amazing transformation to have ever taken place is that of Jesus being dead, and rising to life. If he had stayed in the tomb, everything He had said and done would have been for nothing. As many people saw in the days following His resurrection, Jesus IS alive, so that we may have life. What are you going to do with it?

Easter - Good Friday, It Was For Us.

Good Friday is one part of the most significant events to have ever occured. Without the sacrifice of Jesus, there is no forgiveness of sin, there is no conquering of death for eternal life with God in heaven and there is no restoration of relationship with Him. Christianity isn't Christianity without the events we remember at Easter. And why is Easter an event to remember at all? It's because of you.

Easter - The Last Supper

Bread and wine, 2 everyday items to symbolise a sacrifice that only one person could make. Breaking bread, such a brilliant picture to remind us that Jesus' body was literally torn. Wine, red grapes crushed to extract the juice out of them. In the same way, Jesus was crushed, his blood pouring out. It's a humbling experience to remeber what Jesus did for each one of us in this amazing way. What we now call 'The Last Supper' is the origin of this special act.

God's Mission, Our Mission - Those Around Us

Paul is probably the most successful person in the Bible when it comes to speaking to 'foreign' cultures about Jesus. He had a certain technique. A way of going about the tricky business of telling these cultures that a Jewish man was the Son Of God, and that they should ditch all of those gods they've been worshipping for generations. He was on God's mission, and we can learn a lot about how to go about the mission God wants us on, from Paul's example.

God's Mission, Our Mission - Those We Already Know

If we were a stone that God threw into the calm pond of life, the ripples wouldn't have to travel far before they found someone who needed God's love in their life. We all know people. They may be neighbours, they may be workmates, they may be friends or people at a social group. Whatever the case, a hurting world is right on our doorstep. We don't have to go far to share the amazing love shown to us through Jesus.

God's Mission, Our Mission - One Another

“One another” is a term used reasonably often in the New Testament by a number of people. It's interesting to compile those verses and read them together and listen for the consistent themes. Jesus was quite specific about how His disciples are meant to interact with one another. He said it should define who are His followers versus those who are not. So what is it that His followers should be doing?

God's Mission, Our Mission - Not By Might But By My Spirit

In today's society, we're familiar with the concept of a remote control. Whether it's for the TV, DVD, a toy car or helicopter we understand what it is to be in control using a remote. But how familiar are we of the concept of us being controlled by a remote source? Many of us might find that scary or even think that to let something or someone else be in control is wrong. So when we read “ not by might but by my Spirit ” in the Bible, what does that mean? Who is meant to be in control?

God's Mission, Our Mission - More Of The Holy Spirit

Following on from the previous message, James looks at the power of transformation that comes about through the Holy Spirit. To be more like Jesus we need more of His Spirit working in and through us. The more we are like Jesus the more people will be attracted to Him through us. Is there a more important work in our lives than that of the Holy Spirit?

God's Mission, Our Mission - Empowering Of The Holy Spirit

The Spirit Of God, the Holy Spirit, is a very real part of of the three person in one figure Christians call 'God'. His role in a Christian's life is equally real. In the book of Acts, we find the disciples waiting as Jesus asked them to. They were promised a gift that would help them, strengthen them, equip them and more. They had no idea what this gift would look like, how exactly it would come or what the result would look like. They trusted Jesus, and obeyed. What followed was an event that would change their world... and ours..

God's Mission, Our Mission - Promise Of The Holy Spirit

If someone told you that they've given you something but you never receive it you'd probably think they hadn't really given you anything at all! What if you discovered that they really had given you this gift and it was something quite amazing, but you just hadn't come and got it from that person? It was there all the time, it was yours, you just had to take it. Would you go and get it? Would you be on your way even more quickly if you found out that not only was this gift yours, but this gift would sustain you and give you strength when you most needed it, maybe even before you knew you needed it? Sometimes, to receive something, we need to go and get it. And there are some things we should 'receive' without any further delay.

God's Mission, Our Mission

You've probably noticed that no-one else in the world is quite the same as you. Some may be similar, but no-one is exactly the same. Why is that? Sure, there's all the genetic diversity that goes into it, and the reasons why that means some are stronger in certain areas etc. But why? What's the point? What's the reason for having such diversified life? One answer could be that that's just the way we as people have developed over time. But what if it's more than that? What if it's actually for a very important reason? What if you've been created for a very specific purpose? What if you're good at the things you're good at in life because that's what you're meant to be doing, and the stuff you're not so good at is the stuff someone else is meant to be doing? We're not talking about whether you're good at making your bed here, we're talking about life and what it takes to live it. Why are we here?

The Resilient Life - Go The Distance

We've probably all, at some point, been in a situation like this... You embark on something new that is really exciting or interesting. You get a little way into it. All of a sudden you discover that it's not as easy as you imagined it would be. You realise the proffesionals make it look much easier than it really is. You decide you did well to give it a go. You don't do that thing that was really exciting or interesting ever again - even though in the back of your mind somewhere, you would like to be able to do it. Sound familiar? What does it take to make it? To get past that initial 'bump in the road' and actually get to the destination you wanted to get to?

The Resilient Life - Learn From The Past, Don't Live It

Back in the 'olden days', one of the ways criminals were kept from escaping was to attach a big, heavy metal ball to their ankle by chain. This heavy ball made it difficult for them to go anywhere. When they did move, they were slow, having to lug this extra weight around. Swimming was not a good idea! In much the same way, we can let the things of our past drag us down, or hold us back, making it difficult to move forward. Maybe something happened to you, or you did something to someone else? Whatever it is, there is a time for forgiveness and to move on. It's amazing how good a 'chain cutter' forgiveness is.

The Resilient Life - Inspired By The Big Picture

How hard is it to put a jigsaw puzzle together when you don't have the whole picture to refer to? The individual pieces don't give many clues. Even when it's completed, if you only look at the picture from so close that your nose is touching it, you won't get much of an idea of what the picture is. It's in stepping away, taking in the whole picture, looking at the 'verandah view' that the real beauty and meaning can be properly seen and appreciated.

The Resilient Life - Quitting Is Not An Option

At the start of the year, after the mayhem of the end of the previous year, it can sometimes feel overwhelming. You have just managed to get through the twelve months when another twelve comes knocking on your door. You may want to throw in the towel, but that's not going to solve anything. People all throughout history have had their feet taken out from under them in one way or another, and yet have got back to their feet only to do something amazing. Quitting is not an option, so don't entertain it, get on your feet, get inspired and do something amazing in your sphere of influence.
